Chapter Twenty-Five
As expected, the news of his only sonâs death hit him hard. The grief lay bare in the deep lines on his face as Ray McGee turned away from Angus and shut the door to his trailer behind him without so much as speaking a single word.
Angus had intended on asking him a few more questions, but it was clear Ray wasnât in any condition to be interviewed. He was the kind of man who needed time on his own to come to terms with it.
Sympathy lay heavy in Angusâs heart where he stood staring out across the trailer park. He turned his attention heavenward and pleaded with God to spare him having to make another house call like the one he had just made to Aaron McGeeâs father. As he spoke with God, he thanked Him that it was Joe who answered his earlier call instead of MJ. She would not have been so easily accepting that he was still nowhere closer to finding her son.
The thought of having to make another house call, possibly next time to Jacobâs mother, broke his heart into a million pieces. Informing parents that theyâd lost a child never got any easier and it was the part of his job he hated the most. Over his years in law enforcement, heâd had his fair share of delivering bad tidings to loved ones but never to someone he shared lunch, or his faith, with. Delivering such news to MJ would be far worse than any call heâd ever made before. This time it was personal. Heâd seen the desperation in her eyes, seen how much her son meant to her, seen how far sheâd go to save him. There was nothing MJ wouldnât do to save her son. And he would know. Heâd seen it all before. In his own motherâs eyes, that night she packed their bags and the three of them ran away from his abusive father. She had somehow managed to save up enough money to pay their airfare. âA single trip to anywhere,â she had called it. And when they got to the airport, it just so happened that the next flight out of Glasgow took them straight to Las Vegas.
Perhaps that was what he liked about MJ. She shared the same resilience as his own mother. That and the fact that she too had ginger hair, just like his mother did before it turned white.
A faint smile broke across his face as his memory flooded with pictures of his mother when he and his brother were just children. Images of them visiting his grandparents in Scotland when he was barely twelve. It had been the only time they went back to Scotland; to bid her father farewell before he passed.
Emotions tugged hard at his heart as Angus stared across the open land, the big orange sun hanging low on the horizon as he vowed to do whatever it took to find Jacob Foley.
Still deep in thought, Angus barely heard Rayâs croaky voice drifting in the breeze toward him.
